Guides Selling and growing

Is every Buy Box worth winning?

A lone shopping trolley in an empty car park.

When you lose the Buy Box you see two numbers: your price and the other seller’s. What you do not see is your floor: the price below which this item earns you nothing.

What your floor is made of

Purchase price, the commission for your category, the fixed fee per item where there is one, shipping and packaging. Commission runs between 7% and 16% depending on the category, and between 4% and 12% on Kaufland.pl; the rates are on our page about Kaufland fees. If you only set the purchase price against the selling price, you count a profit that is not there.

On a €28.99 item in a 13% category, nearly four euros of commission is gone before purchase and shipping are counted at all. Two euros off is a lot if €1.40 is what remains.

When to lower your price

If the price you need is comfortably above your floor, lower it. If it is below your floor, let the Buy Box go, because every sale would be at a loss. If it is just above, look at the whole item and ask whether it is still worth stocking at 80 cents each.

Sellgrip works through these cases per item and puts the floor on the same line as the suggestion, under Buy Box. Price guard alerts you when a price slips below it.

Why not just reprice automatically?

Because a repricer that only watches other sellers’ prices will eventually take you below your costs. At a price that holds the Buy Box and earns nothing, you still carry storage, shipping and the risk of returns.

Does the lowest price always win the Buy Box?

No. Kaufland does not publish all its criteria, but it does state that when offers have the same minimum price, the one with the fastest delivery time wins. It also recommends keeping price, shipping cost and delivery time in line with your offers on other platforms.

What if I am the only seller?

Then the Buy Box is yours, and the question to ask is whether your price could be higher.

Is an item without the Buy Box worth keeping?

Sometimes. If the margin holds and the competitor regularly runs out of stock, you still sell. Only keep the offer live while you have the stock: cancelling an order because the item is gone counts towards your cancellation rate, as described in What does a cancellation rate above 1% cost?
